James Patterson and Stephenie Meyer Top Highest Paid Authors List

Forbes magazine has compiled a top ten list of the highest paid authors in 2010 and the two names at the top of the list come as no surprise. Prolific author James Patterson is the top earner at $70 million. Stephenie Meyer is in second place with $40 million. The list was compiled using data from the past 12 months ending June 1st. Stephenie Meyer’s latest book, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, was released on June 5th, so its sales wouldn’t be included in that $40 million sum. Although, I’d wager she would still be in second even if Bree Tanner was factored in. Here’s Forbes top ten list of highest paid authors in full: 1. James Patterson ($70 million) 2. Stephenie Meyer ($40 million) 3. Stephen King ($34 million) 4. Danielle Steel ($32 million) 5. Ken Follet ($20 million) 6. Dean Kootz ($18 million) 7. Janet Evanovich [...]

It’s a White Twilight for Christmas

The Bookseller is reporting that Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga will be getting a makeover for Christmas. Limited edition paperbacks will be released with white covers, but the catch is that they will not be available in the US. Here’s more from The Bookseller: The four limited-edition titles: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn, will be published by Atom on 14th October as £7.99 paperbacks, available only in the UK and Ireland, and Little, Brown’s territories including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and India. The white editions will not be available in the US. The white titles will only be published between October and Christmas 2010, replacing the usual black jackets. The titles will have crimson-edged pages and crimson back covers, with text confined to the spines. It’s too bad we won’t be getting these in the US. What do you think of the new white Twilight covers? Follow me [...]

Reading Twilight Books Can Change Your Workplace

Tom Barrack, real-state mogul and owner of Colony Capital, recently sent out a memo to his employees where he talks about his discovery of the Twilight saga. While on a yacht, with nothing else to do, he reluctantly picked up Twilight and was surprised to find himself hooked on the series. He says, Here is my point. The idea of devoting half a day to reading these books was something that never, NEVER, entered my mind as something I would ever, EVER do. I hated them. I mocked them. It made no difference to me that over 20 million books were sold, movies made, and Team Edward and Team Jacob pandemonium had engulfed the world. I was simply stuck in my point of view. Once I ventured into the books I learned something. I now understand why some women are emotionally altered from merely reading a book. I have also [...]

Book Buzz: BREAKING DAWN, Oprah, Rizzoli & Isles, and More

From Stephenie Meyer’s Breaking Dawn to an anti-diet book Oprah calls “the miracle we’ve been waiting for,” there are a few books getting a lot of buzz this week. Let’s take a look at some books that have been on TV or in the news over the past few days. Breaking Dawn Movie News: Will that gory childbirth scene make it into the movie? PopSugar interviewed Breaking Dawn screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg about whether the infamous childbirth scene will be shown onscreen. Her answer: “The childbirth — all the scenes, I feel — should be on screen…would we actually see Edward’s teeth through the placenta? I don’t think so. I don’t think we need to see that…” Rosenberg also mentions that she’s relieved that Breaking Dawn is going to be split into two movies because it would be too hard to fit everything into just one movie. She also says she’s [...]

MIDNIGHT SUN on Hold Because Stephenie Meyer ‘Burned Out on Vampires’

Twilight fans anxious for Stephenie Meyer to finish writing Midnight Sun—a retelling of Twilight from Edward’s perspective—are just going to have to be patient. Meyer recently granted an interview to four Twilight fan sites, and addressed the Midnight Sun issue. She says, “What’s true is that I’m really burned out on vampires. And, I don’t want to write it badly. So I want to wait until I’m excited about the material again, and I’m excited about Edward, and that it’s something that’s motivating.” Meyer put the book on hold after the first part was leaked onto the Internet. But now that fans have had a taste of Midnight Sun, they are desperate for more. Meyer says in the interview that she gets asked about the book wherever she goes. She admits that part of the reason the project is on hold is her stubbornness. Meyer: You know, I have my [...]

Jose’s Favorite Audiobooks

June is National Audiobook Month and as part of the celebration Kristen and I are listing our favorite audiobooks. Audiobooks are a great way to enjoy books when it’s not convenient to read them, like during commutes to and from work or when you’re working outdoors. The best audiobooks help provide an extra dimension to books, giving the characters and the plot more life than just letters on a page. Here are some of my favorite audiobooks: Anathem by Neal Stephenson (Narrated by Oliver Wyman, Tavia Gilbert, William Dufris, Neal Stephenson) I had first listened to Anathem after hearing how great an audiobook it was from other science fiction fans. The narration does a great job in pulling you into the story, and the emotions felt by the characters come through amazingly. Another nice touch is the Gregorian chant songs that are played in between parts of the book, it [...]

Kristen’s Favorite Audiobooks

The month of June is National Audiobook Month and Jen at Devourer of Books is hosting daily discussions of audiobooks all this week. I’m a huge audiobook addict and you might have noticed that many of the book reviews Jose and I do are of audiobooks. We started listening to them a few years ago to make our respective commutes to work go by faster. Since then, I’ve also started listening to them on the treadmill or while doing chores. I love them because they allow you to do two things at once and they make boring tasks a lot more fun. In honor of Audiobook Week, I thought I’d share some of my all-time favorites: Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris I consider David Sedaris’ audiobooks to be some of the best out there, and I think they are a great starting point for a [...]

Slow Sales for Stephenie Meyer’s BREE TANNER

Publisher’s Weekly is reporting that Stephenie Meyer’s latest book, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner (Read The Review Here), is selling poorly at independent bookstores. PW talked to independents all over the country who reported slow sales and they believe that the ability to read the book free online at BreeTanner.com is to blame. They also feel like the publisher hasn’t done much to promote the book and that many customers aren’t even aware of it. However, Little, Brown reports that they sold more than 350,000 copies of the book in the first two days of sale. So apparently the book is selling, just probably through Amazon and other online stores. Interestingly, Little, Brown says that only 15,000 people have read the book online. I would have expected that number to be much, much higher. In fact, it’s so low that I would guess that the online version isn’t [...]

THE SHORT SECOND LIFE OF BREE TANNER by Stephenie Meyer

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers Pages: 192 Source: Free from breetanner.com Buy on Amazon THE SHORT SECOND LIFE OF BREE TANNER by Stephenie Meyer Book Review (3.5 out of 5 Stars) When Stephenie Meyer announced the release of The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner earlier this year, the fan reaction was “ZOMG, a new book in the Twilight series!!!!!!” I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but I think fans need to dial it back and understand a few things about the novella before they buy it. Basically, it’s more like a bonus feature on a DVD than a new entry in the Twilight series. Meyer never intended to publish this as a stand-alone book—it’s something that developed out of editing process, a glimpse into the life of the newborn vampire that is killed by the Volturri [...]

Hamilton Available June 1, 2010 (Order on Amazon) From the publisher: The music came back up and the next group of little girls, slightly older, came out.
