Pages: 448 Source: Publisher Buy on Amazon   EARTH’S ULTIMATE CONFLICT by Kathy Porter Review (3 out of 5 Stars) The world is going to end soon, as the damage done to the environment by humans has sealed its fate. People are coming down with crazy diseases. Oh, and aliens are coming. Those stories about alien abduction? All true. With all these crazy events happening, families are being torn apart and ordinary people must make impossible decisions. When a chance at salvation presents itself, it’s up to the President of the United States to decide whom we can trust or else the world will perish. This is the basis of Earth’s Ultimate Conflict, the first book in the Gray Guardians Series, written by Kathy Porter. I enjoyed reading Earth’s Ultimate Conflict because I thought Porter did a great job [...]

THE PASSAGE by Justin Cronin May Be the Hottest Book of the Summer

The Passage by Justin Cronin debuts on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, but it has been getting a ton of buzz for months now. It’s the first book in a planned trilogy, and, yes, it’s about vampires, but these are no sparkly, vegetarian vampires. In The Passage, a military experiment to create super soldiers goes awry and millions of people end up infected with a virus that makes them thirst for blood. A young girl who has been infected with the virus but doesn’t have the monstrous side effect might be the key to saving humanity. It’s been compared to Stephen King’s The Stand, and even King himself is a fan of the book and is blurbed on the cover. The Passage isn’t even out yet, but the movie rights have been sold. According to the New York Times, Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions reportedly paid $1.75 million for the film [...]

What Science Fiction Books Should Be In Every Fan’s Library?

The folks over at SFSIGNAL.com had a great two-part post (Part 1 & Part 2) a few weeks ago when they asked a variety of panelists “What science fiction books should be in every fan’s library?” The panelists were allowed to recommend up to ten books, and could explain their selections to the readers. It’s a great read if you are a fan of sci-fi or are just looking for new ideas of what to read. The article made me think of what works should be in every sci-fi fan’s library, and I compiled the list you see below. I split my list into Classics and Moderns, not so much as to which are older or newer works, but more based on what I consider to be foundations of science fiction (Classics) and which are books that make the genre so great in today’s times (Moderns). Classics Dune (Frank Herbert) [...]

DEAD IN THE FAMILY by Charlaine Harris

DEAD IN THE FAMILY by Charlaine Harris Review (4 out of 5 Stars) Dead in the Family by Charlaine Harris Release Date: May 4, 2010 Publisher: Ace Hardcover Pages: 320 Source: Purchased Buy on Amazon SPOILER WARNING: I’ve tried to avoid including spoilers from Dead in the Family, but the review does contain spoilers from previous books. If you are new to the series, start with my review of the first book, Dead Until Dark. Dead in the Family by Charlaine Harris is the tenth book in the Southern Vampire/Sookie Stackhouse series. It picks up shortly after Dead and Gone left off and, unfortunately, things are not going well for our beloved characters. Now that the Fae War is over, the survivors must deal with the aftermath: Sookie is mentally and physically scarred by the torture she endured, Bill is still very sick with silver poisoning, Jason is moving on [...]

LOVER MINE by J. R. Ward Review (3.5 out of 5 Stars) Lover Mine by J. R. Ward Release Date: April 27, 2010 Publisher: NAL Hardcover Pages: 528 Source: Purchased Buy on Amazon J. R. Ward’s alpha-male vampire warriors return in the eighth book of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, Lover Mine. This time it’s John Matthew’s turn to find love, the only problem is that the woman he is meant to be with, Xhex, is currently being held captive by his enemy, Lash. That’s a pretty big obstacle, but even larger problems loom if the two want to have a relationship. Both will have to overcome the abuse they suffered in the past, and the half-vampire/half-sympath Xhex will have to conquer the darker, self-serving side of her personality. Meanwhile, Blay continues to fight his attraction to Quinn (though I don’t get what he sees in the inconsiderate man-whore). Enter [...]
