When I first heard that Seth Grahame-Smith, author of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (see our review here), had a new book coming out I wasn’t too interested because the whole horror/classic lit mashup genre never really appealed to me. That changed when I found out that the book’s title was Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. My curiosity piqued, I immersed myself in Grahame-Smith’s prose and found it to be one of the best books I have read in recent history, as it expertly blends biographical, fantasy, horror, and action genres into one amazing read.
The key to the success of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is Grahame-Smith’s telling the story using a biographical style, which is as good as Goodwin’s Team [...]

I haven’t reviewed a graphic novel for Daemon’s Books before, but issue 32 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is just so awesome that I couldn’t resist. It’s the first issue written by Brad Meltzer and the first in the Twilight arc, a four-issue arc in which we will finally learn the identity of the mysterious big bad of Season 8. The big reveal will take place in the next issue, though it’s been nearly impossible to avoid the spoilers so I think most of us already know who it is. For now though it’s still a secret [...]

Magician: Apprentice by Raymond Feist

MAGICIAN: APPRENTICE by Raymond Feist Review (4 out of 5 Stars)

Magician: Apprentice by Raymond Feist
Release Date: November 1982
Publisher:Spectra
Pages: 528

Magician: Apprentice by Raymond Feist manages to be many things at once. At times the plot is predictable, but it will also surprise you. The story begins with our hero, Pug, a young orphan kitchen boy from the peaceful and happy town of Crydee. When Pug and his best friend Thomas are chosen for their apprenticeships, their fates seem comfortably predictable. However, when some unknown, and unwelcome visitors from another world start appearing, both of their lives are forever changed.
There are 2 things I really liked about Magician:Apprentice. For starters, the characters are fantastic. Although many of them may remind of you Tolkien characters, they will nevertheless charm their way into your heart. Secondly, Feist cuts out all the fat and gives you only the major plot points. ANATHEM by Neal Stephenson Review (5 out of 5 Stars)

Anathem by Neal Stephenson

Publisher: William Morrow
Pages: 960

To me, the sign of a good book is that you want to read it again after you finish it. The sign of a great book is not only that you want to read it again, but you can pick up that book at any time and any place in the story and start reading. Anathem is one a few books that fall in this category. Neal Stephenson’s story weighs in at just under 1000 pages (32 hours for the audiobook), yet does a wonderful job in creating good characters and an engaging story that tackles a wide variety of topics (from environmental to metaphysical to linguistics).
The story takes place on an Earth-like planet named Arbre and you can infer from the story and the [...]

With “New Moon” hitting theaters this Friday, I’ve had Twilight on the brain recently. While looking for another good vampire romance, I came across Glass Houses by Rachel Caine, the first book in the Morganville Vampires series. The series takes place in Morganville, Texas, a town that is run by vampires. It’s also home to Texas Prairie University, where super-smart sixteen-year-old Claire is starting her freshman year as an advanced placement student. Most freshmen hate the dorms, but for Claire it’s truly a living hell after she inadvertently embarrasses head mean girl, Monica. Desperate for a new place to live, she answers an ad for a roommate at an off-campus house called the Glass House. There she meets Michael, Shane, [...]

A TOUCH OF DEAD by Charlaine Harris

A TOUCH OF DEAD by Charlaine Harris Review (3 out of 5 Stars)

A Touch Of Dead
by Charlaine Harris
Release Date: October 6, 2009
Publisher: Ace
Pages: 208
Buy on Amazon
This past weekend I checked out the book A Touch Of Dead by Charlaine Harris. A Touch Of Dead is a collection of short stories that features our favorite vamp-loving heroine Sookie Stackhouse. Just to be clear, this book is not a continuation of the current series, but rather a collection of tales that could have conceivably happened while the rest of the series was taking place. It’s a short read with large print, pictures and a petite page count of only 208. What I enjoyed about this book is that it was so small I could keep it in my purse and bust it out while in waiting rooms and the like.
The stories are better than average and I would recommend them [...]

In the second book of Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse series, Living Dead in Dallas, Sookie finds herself getting more and more involved in the vamps’ world. Was it Michael Corleone who said, “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in?” That should be Sookie’s motto because even though she knows better than to get mixed up with vampires, she always seems to anyway. This time it’s after she’s attacked by a maenad that she ends up owing Eric a favor. He wants her to go to Dallas to find out who’s been kidnapping vampires. The prime suspect is the Fellowship of the Sun, a sketchy group that masquerades as a religious organization. [...]

AND ANOTHER THING… Book Review

AND ANOTHER THING… by Eoin Colfer

And Another Thing… by Eoin Colfer
Release Date: October 12, 2009
Publisher: Hyperion, New York
Pages: 273
Buy on Amazon
And Another Thing… is the sixth book in the Hitchhiker’s Guide trilogy, and the first to be penned by Eoin Colfer (the first five books in the series were written by Douglas Adams before his passing). Colfer is best known for his work in the Artemis Fowl books, a great Young Adult series that takes on the fantasy world in an exciting manner. The task of continuing a much beloved sci-fi series with a large dedicated following was not helped by the way the fifth book, Mostly Harmless, ended (where the main characters in the series find themselves on a planet about to be blown up).
The book continues the tale of Arthur Dent and the assorted companions he has met through his travels in the galaxy. After [...]
